LeBron Raymone James (born December 30, 1984) is an American basketball player with the Los Angeles Lakers who garnered the first national attention as the top high school basketball player in the country. He became a four-time NBA MVP with his athleticism and vision. LeBron James became an immediate star after skipping college to join the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers. After leading the Miami Heat to titles in 2012 and 2013, James returned to Cleveland and won a third championship with Cleveland in 2016.
Childhood and Early Life
Born in Akron, Ohio, in 1984, James is the single child of Gloria James. Gloria struggled to provide for James during his childhood. His father, Anthony McClelland, has an extensive criminal record and was not involved in their life. When James was about five years old, he and his mother moved seven times in a year. Life was often a struggle for the family, as they moved from apartment to apartment in the seedier neighborhoods of Akron while Gloria struggled to find steady work. For a couple of years during elementary school, James lived with a foster family. Regardless of any troubles they may have had, however, James and his mother have a close and strong relationship.
James played high school basketball for St. Vincent–St. Mary High School in his hometown of Akron, Ohio. He joined the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003 as the first overall draft pick. James quickly emerged as a league star and concluded his first season by winning the NBA Rookie of the Year Award. However, after falling short of the expectations set by the media, fans, and himself, James departed Cleveland in 2010 as a free agent to sign with the Miami Heat.
